To give a super brief explanation: You get to take care and raise a digital pet while also taking care of yourself. Basically, it's self care with a cute finch that you get to name and everything.
I've had my finch for, I believe, 3 months now, and I didn’t think I'd feel motivated to do stuff for myself with it, but turns out I would! Not much else going on, but it's cute, and I enjoy it, so if you want maybe something simple yet cute to help you push through each day, maybe give this app a go?
Years ago, I was searching the Google Play store install 8 Beat Story when I saw a new game showing up amongst the other idol/music games at the time: Dance Sparkle Girls Tournament. To make a long story short: I checked its page, found out it was in beta, and decided to give it (I'll call it Garutona and Dance Sparkle from here on out) a shot.
Graphics: The graphics are kinda nice, though some would say it's "basic", but hey, the art style is cute. God I wish I had gotten Luluca's SSR
Sound: Seaside Waltz, I love you *so* much, I love that Maika Fantasia breathed even more life into you. Fun fact - there are vocals featured in a handful of songs; however as the special Beta Notice message displayed in-game said, it is artificial/synthesized voices -- to be more precise, it's Crypton's Rin Kagamine. I like Vocaloids, and the tunes are alright, so it gets a pass in my book.
Gameplay: a straight line of 7 where you have to tap, swipe, and hold notes. Is it weird to say I liked the tap noises? Right up there with the two-notes beat map of Tokyo 7th Sisters.
Storyline: I...played this game years ago and don't remember too much because I'm certain they were still introducing characters until its beta shut down.
Value: It was in beta, so it wasn’t perfect, but I still found this ball of wip (work-in-progress) entertaining. Heck, it even had 2 events and tons of log-in treats for the players, so gacha pulling didn’t take too long. I miss the game, really, and I'm sorry Maika Fantasia had to terminate in January. Maybe someday this game will have another chance.
Man, I wish I had been around when the original game had been running because I feel as though I would've liked it.
For those unaware, Ensemble Girls ~Memories~ is less a "game" and more an app that compiles all of the now defunct game's stories and voicelines. Because it's in Japanese and there are fans of this franchise, there are translations being done (thank you, translators on Ensemble-Girls Wiki!) The writing is a little silly-ish (but it's the big sister of Ensemble Stars, so I shouldn't be surprised)
It's unfortunate that an announcement of a remake/reboot for EnGirls' 10th anniversary never happened, but that doesn't mean that - maybe? - there could be one in the future?
I had this in my "games to try" list for a while, and...it's okay? The concept of building an idol group from the ground up is interesting, but I eventually lost interest a little while after unlocking the "Interview" level. Raising Sims are usually alright to me (A3 being my favourite) but this one seemed to drag on at times thanks to the stress/fatigue that your idols get after a while (but hey, it's realistic, so I'll give them that.
Pros: You get to name the idol agency, your character, your character's gender, the names of certain idols in your group, and the idol group's name
Cons: You *are* able to customize your character, but certain skin tones are behind an in-game currency you have to use to buy it..for whatever reason. For some, the gameplay does, indeed, sound fun, but the translation errors ("English input" x7), glitches (characters refusing to move to the dance studio when I drag them, for example), and overall gameplay feels lackluster.
I do see potential here, but it still has a long way to go...though judging by a recent review on the Play Store, this game hasn't been updated in quite some time, so, I guess whatever is presented here is the completed(?) piece.
So the Puraore/Pride of Orange franchise has been on my "to watch" for a while, but I finally got on it after finding out that the game "PuraOre: Smile Princess" was shutting down by the end of November. Still on episode two of the show, but anyway...the game! That's what I'm reviewing.
A week into this, I've gotta say that this is definitely isn't bad, but I can understand why it fell under. PuraOre already had a mixed reaction since its franchise's presentation, mixed responses to the anime, and then the game fell under the "meh" category
Graphics: Pretty good! The chibis used for the main hockey gameplay are cute, (but since you're watching them and it would've been hard to tell them apart, they're not wearing helmets as they play,,,oh boy) the sprites are Live2D of course, and the cards are nice.
Sound: Do you think there's an alternative timeline where Smile Princess/Dream Monkeys strictly were an idol group instead of hockey/idol hybrid group? Because honestly the song from them that plays in the final around of a hockey game when you're ahead is neat-o
Gameplay: Admittedly, I loved watching these guys skate around, ramming into each other, but gosh did it k1ll me when my team would run off in the opposite direction with the puck...so. Many. Times. There's also a fast forward (x1 and x3) button so you don't have to watch the 1-2 minute games. Y'know, it's weird how little of the "idol" element they used in the game besides the music, a handful of images, and the first "Victory Dance" clip being used as a download screen. Huh. Wish they could've done more if they wanted to commit to that.
Storyline: This game was even hooked at the end of the anime where Manaka said that Dream Monkeys' story would continue on, so for those who haven't seen the anime might not have a clue what's going on if they already didn't since it's in Japanese (of course). Speaking of the story, what happened to Maya Walker? She's a character who was in the anime, but here, she's only a labeled opponent whenever you play against Canada in a hockey game. Was the game going to put her in later, or...?
Value: Combining hockey and idols was an odd choice from the get-go, but I still enjoyed this game, and I guess I'll keep playing it until its end. Not sure how much of a value it will be once it's in offline mode, because it probably won't be much if only the stories are available and not the gameplay, gacha, etc, like EnGirls/Ensemble Girls.
Thanks for your time anyway, PuraOre!
It's been a while since I've felt invested in a bubble-popping game (I guess that's what that genre is called), and maybe I feel enjoyment from this one is because it's My Little Pony. I'll get to the points of each category
Graphics: Pretty top notch and cute actually! They're actually close to being on par with MLP FiM's animation. The figurines are nice. Makes me wish we had those instead of P*p V*nyls.
Sound: The sound is alright! There are only a few tracks - the FiM theme as the title screen, "choosing your figures" music, battle music, and I think one that plays as your character walks around. Nothing to write home about, but definitely not bad.
Gameplay: Basically, it's a bubble game where you launch balls/bubbles to destroy enemies on the map. After a certain amount of time, the enemies will get closer to you until you hit them enough times. Figurines are what you use at your disposal and, to be even more interesting, there are different types of figurines both as abilities (offense, defense, things like that) and rarities. For rarities, there are: commons, rare, ultra rare, and legendary (I might be missing one, not sure). The figures can be earned as log-in bonuses while others can only be attained through the in-game gacha. The gacha can be a con for a lot of people, depending on who you ask. To further get why, there is a grand total of 60 characters to obtain (no villain characters though, rip). Will there be more? Not sure. If not, then I guess you can technically finish the game.
Storyline: You, the player, get to play as one of the Young Six members (a group of characters introduced much later into FiM), and you get to walk around and have various battles with other notable FiM characters. There are four main locations with each area assigned a boss: Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy. Twilight Sparkle and Rarity aren't bosses because I Don't Know. Your chosen character has to beat all of them and became a Pocket Pony Master. *insert Pokemon joke here*
Value: This is where my compliments kind of stop in their place. It's not the gacha or the the gameplay that knocks the value rating down...it's because of the ads. In most cases, I don't mind ads. Watch an ad for free gacha? Sure! Watch an ad to help out this independent game developer? Hell yes
However, this game suffers from Interrupting Ad-ism. Pause the game and when you're about to return, get hit with an ad. Walk around for a second, you might get another advertisement. Finish a fight? Get an ad as soon as you start walking again. Can you watch an ad to revive a fallen figure? Nope! You have to use the same in-game currency used for their gacha. No, there isn't a way to buy a package from their shop to permanently disable ads, which is unfortunate because I feel as though some people would be willing to do that instead of getting smacked by an ad every few seconds.
Overall, I enjoy the game! I'm nearly at the "end" of it, so I'll probably try out another MLP game afterwards.
But g-d, do I hate the ads so much.
Usually, I would write a semi-detailed review, but I'll cut down to the chase:
Graphics: pretty darn good - especially the 4 and 5 star cards
Music: please leave my brain, Crazy Roulette
Gameplay: Somewhat basic music/rhythm game controls but the sliding notes are definitely interesting!
Storyline: I'm still on Chapter 2 at the moment, but I'm enjoying it so far. Good luck, Alkaloid!
That being said... may the heavens bless Mayoi and give him the love he needs, amen
Admittedly, I was excited to play this because I was lucky to have played the second beta version of it, back when it was called "Dance Sparkle Girls Tournament" and was kind of curious about where it would go, etc.
There's a bit of a stumble with their release of this that I have to address as of July 1st (dating it just in case this is resolved later), so I'll do a "pro" and "con" run-down.
Pros:
- 1 or 2 of the songs I recognize from DSGT, one of which I kind of have fond memories with (it was called "Song of Friends" back then, but no clue what it is now)
- Yume's, Sarah's, and Fran's designs are pretty good in comparison to their previous designs
Middle:
- Not everything is voiced. Oh no? Not the end of the world to me, honestly, because I remember a few other idol/music games doing this. It isn't often, but you know. I guess I can see why it's a problem, especially because the only times you seem to hear the characters speak full sentences is when you're in a different menu and pull an SSR. Other than that? Nope.
EDIT: They don't even speak during card skill activations during a Live. Are they planning on adding voices later?
- The art isn't for everybody, I will have to admit that. Remember when I said that Fran's design looked nice? Well, her face looks a little weird, sprite-wise.
Cons:
- There's probably an option to fix it, but when you go to a different menu with a character, the bg music is so loud that it drowns said character's voice. (Heck, I even encountered Rioko on one menu and she didn't even say a single word and had a blank dialogue box.)
Massive Con:
- The tap response is Not Good. It's either slow or it's so little that you have to lay your device flat on a table and hit right in the middle of the circles (gee, I wonder why I said that second portion ). It's a pretty critical asset for a music game, and I really, REALLY hope they fix this.
UPDATE: As of May 2023, the tap responses seem to have improved a lot after an update they implemented! You still have to adjust the speed; however, and sometimes the flick notes are stubborn with their response - it's still a step-up, though!
I kind of feel bad for leaving a review like this, but I feel like this needs to be said, and hopefully things about this game will improve over time.
I hope you improve, Maika Fantasia! I'll stick around!
I've had this game on my phone for a few hours now, so I'm still gathering my overall thoughts about this game.
The character designs are pretty nice (special shoutout to the magician R card lady - I forgot her name right now ) and can get a wee bit risqué, but I can take a guess and say that's why a majority of us are here.
Now that I think about my rating for the game's storyline, is there even a storyline? I can't say since I'm only at rank 16, but I'm assuming no, but, again...I'm assuming there's a different kind of "plot".
Overall, interesting idle game!
So, despite the fact I'm using a brand new phone, I found myself unable to play the global version of Project Sekai (thanks, bit differences in mobile devices!), but to my surprise, I'm able to play the Traditional Chinese version! An automatic five points already
Graphics: Pretty nice!
Sound: I knew a small chunk of these songs since I'm in the Vocaloid fandom (somewhat), so I had a feeling the rest of the songs featured would be awesome. One of my favourites so far is the human cover of "Charles".
Gameplay: It's pretty fun, though it's under the "basic music game" format but that's cool by me
Storyline: ,,,well, I can't read traditional Chinese, so,,N/A.
Value: I'm only on the third day of playing Sekai, but I think this is an overall fun game. Can't wait to try out one of those "live performances" in the game.
edit: first time opening the live performance thing crashed the app, so I'm not sure my phone can handle it?
Oh My Anne : Puzzle & Story
4.4A recently released mobile game, "Oh My Anne" ("Please spell that with an 'E' at the end," the main character politely informs everybody.) is a Match-3 game you play to further advance the story of Anne and her new home. It's only been out for 3 days, but so far, it's pretty promising!
