4.0Uma Musume is a game where gacha isn't mandatory despite being a gacha game.
Although there are differences in stats between the characters, between the lower star and the higher star, for the most part, this doesn't affect your performance in the game. You can win the final race as of now with those of 1 star as easy as 3 stars, my first win was even with an one star.
Of course, that doesn't mean gacha mechanic is out of the window; more important than characters are the support cards as they allow you to have a higher ceiling for your character. With the right support cards, even the most miserable characters in your opinion can win races with ease.
